It is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Hillsborough, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Troutdale is located on the Willamette River and is home to Troutdale High School and Troutdale Middle School. The community began as an agricultural community in 1907 and became a suburb of Portland after annexation by Portland in 1959. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Troutdale arrived in 1845 when John Crouse and his family journeyed downriver from their farm near present-day Salem to explore the new territory that had been claimed by the Umpqua River band of Indians. They built a small cabin on what is now State Street and called it "Crouse's Ferry." In 1907, when land sales started being made for incorporation as a town, citizens selected the name "Troutdale" for its resemblance to two trout swimming upstream from where they were collected each fall near their home. In 1913, architect Halsey Smith designed the first house in what would become Troutdale; it still stands today on West Main Street. On July 15, 1959, Portland annexed neighboring towns of Beaverton and Hillsboro intoPortland making Troutdale one of six municipalities within Portland proper. At that time there were less than 1,000 people living in total within Municipality boundaries with only three or four businesses open besides schools and churches-. Over time many homes were purchased by retirees or families moving out of state during the Great Recession which devastated much rural America but not so much rural Oregon; this despite many residents having long known about opportunities available outside metropolitanPortland.. In 2016 Mayor Ellen Rosenblum announced plans to renovate all 7 high school campuses including building new gymnasiums/courts/Wellness Centers inside existing high school buildings starting 2020-2021 with an estimated completion date of 2025-2026 which will bring over $50M into Town coffers through increased property values alone!

In 1905, two brothers named Harry and John Prentice opened the first store in Troutdale which became one of the most successful small businesses around at that time. They called their store Harry's Hardware Store until 1903 when they changed their name to Prentice Bros., Incorporated then finally troutdalecrafts incorporation (later known as Troutdale Industries). In 1916 they bought out Harry's Hardware Store for $10,000 dollars making them one of the largest hardware stores west of Interstate 5 at that time! Their success led them to open more stores across Oregon before selling their business to William Haines in 1968 for $60 million dollars! Today they are still considered one of Oregon’s original pioneer companies!
