Troutdale is located in the far south-central portion of Oregon, on the Snake River. The town owes its name to General John C. Fremont, who named it after his father-in-law, David Trout. The first permanent settlement in what is now Troutdale was made in 1848 by a group of pioneers led by Capt. Wm. Halsey and sold land to David Trout for $2 per acre. In 1854, the town became part of Clackamas County and was renamed Troutdale after General Fremont’s home county in California. A post office was established at Troutdale on September 24, 1854, and remained in operation until October 1, 1916. The townsite that now makes up Troutdale was surveyed by Captain John Tilton on February 11, 1850; he named it after himself and his wife Emeline (née Wood). At that time the Snake River flowed through what is now the town limits and there were only a few small settlements along its banks. By 1860, however, with construction of the Oregon Trail starting up northward from Sacramento County in California, many people had started moving into east-central Oregon to find new grazing lands for their livestock or mined silver ore near Canby and Santiam Rivers valleys. In 1870 alone about 25 families moved into what is now Troutdale from central Oregon – some going as far as Knoxville before turning back due to lack of food or transportation opportunities downriver. In 1872 General Joseph Wheeler founded nearby Burns where he became headmaster of a school called Eastern School District No 5; troutdam being one word associated with Burns at that time because so much water passed through it during summertime for irrigation purposes including irrigation canals built by Major Bancroft & Company downstream from present day Fish Lake Dam on Clearwater Creek which originates from Spring Hill Reservoir upstream from today’s Milligan Drive intersection just west of Burns High School). On July 2nd 1863 Wheeler’s forces fought an engagement against Confederate troops near present day Daybreak Road Bridge over Big Pine Creek southeast of downtown Burns while trying to cross overenoikt this river during battle leading upriver; resulting in 4 dead Union soldiers & 20 wounded Confederates according toHistorylink In 1886 James Fenton opened an mercantile store at Whatcom City Limits northwest of present day Daybreak Road Bridge across Big Pine Creek just east thereof which would become one of several frontier stores typical along Wallowa/Jefferson Counties border during early 19th century when most settlers came via wagon train across these same trips following trails blazed by Fur traders such as Nisqually Chief Seattle etc.). Troutdale was founded in 1887 by developer Alfred P. Sloan and his brother, Harry. The town is located on the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, and it became a center for lumber, fishing, and farming. With its riverside townsite, troutdale was an ideal location for milling lumber as well as growing produce and fruits. The first store in Troutdale opened in 1888. In 1916, the original post office closed due to lack of customers; however, a new post office opened in 1919 which continued to serve the community until 2002. Troutdale also had a small school from 1889-1916 before being replaced by Oregon High School in 1922/23.
