The first people to live in what is now Tigard were the Multnomah and Umpqua bands of Indians. They hunted game and collected fruit on the highlands near present-day Portland. When these groups joined together to form a tribe in 1846, they named themselves the Tribes of Multnomah because they lived on Multnomah Island off the coast of Oregon. In 1857, John Tigard moved from his home near Vancouver, Washington to start a new life in Oregon Territory with his family. He named his new community Tigard after himself and his father-in-law, James Tigard, who had settled in that area thirty years earlier. John Tigard built a cabin on an east-west road that later became known as Main Street. He also started growing crops and raising livestock near where he now lives on SE 10th Avenue and SW Holden Road. In 1916, Clackamas County was created from parts ofMultnomah and Umpqua Counties when Oregon entered into statehood. The county seat was then located at Medford but it moved to Tigard in 1922 following the opening of Interstate 5 which crossed through Clackamas County from north to south. In 1853, the first settlers in Tigard arrived and set up a small farm. The town was founded on land that was donated by John Sutter. In 1876, Tigard became the county seat of Multnomah County.
