Tigard, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. Tigard's history began with ranching and farming. The first residents were Finnish immigrants who arrived in 1871. They started a farm on the east side of town, which became known as "The Kalevala Farm." After years of being used for grazing, the farm was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Denny Lippy in 1902 and they began to grow crops and raise livestock there. In 1916, the Lippys sold their land to James Purdy, who built a frame house on it. In 1923, Purdy donated his property to the Tigard School District and Tigard High School opened on it in 1927. The growth of Pierce County brought new settlers to Tigard during World War II; many of them were farmers who had left their homes behind during the war because they were drafted into military service or refused to serve because of religious beliefs. Many local businesses were established during this time including The Kalevala Store which continued until 1967 when it closed due to problems with fire insurance policy; Main Street Garage which operated from 1954-1964 when it was moved from its original location next door to an old post office; and finally, Rheem Electric Cooperative which opened in 1951 adjacent to Purdy Park (now part of downtown). During peacetime, Tigard experienced some economic stability with several businesses remaining open throughout the 1970s while others closed due to competition or changes within their industry or within their community itself (e.g., Aladdin's Theatre went out of business in 1978). However, by 1984 Tigard had lost most if not all its commercial establishments following a series of fires that swept through downtown (the worst being an arson attack against Pacific Gas & Electric Company headquarters).[1] This string of losses led then-Mayor Bob Sobel[2] and City Councilor Don Wickersham[3]to call for city codes that would more tightly regulate businesses' occupancy rates as well as increase security measures around downtown cores.[4][5][6] These measures helped slow down overall economic decline over the next few decades however Downtown still saw pockets of poverty and crime until 2007 when Mayor Charlie Hales announced implementation of a "Community Policing" strategy centered around Neighborhood Watch programs/ patrols aimed at reducing these issues

The land was used as a military reservation and later became part of the city of Portland. In 1917, Tigard was renamed Portland after Mayor Edwin E. Drake and then-Mayor Arthur Elkins recommended it be named after Portland, Maine's first mayor and one of the signers of the United States Constitution
