The area that would become Tigard was first settled by ranchers in 1887 and became a town in 1902. It was named for Alfred Tighe, an early settler. The original school district was created in 1907 and it served as the seat of Yamhill County until 1958 when it moved to Salem. In 1916, Tigard established its own fire department which remains operational today. In 1990, Tigard became home to the world's first IMAX cinema when Regal Cinemas opened its new building on Northwest Sixth Street which has since been renamed Regal Village cinemas throughout the years. In 2002,Portland's only GAS station - Klondike Gas & Electric Company - relocated to Tigard from Beaverton for economic reasons and continues to operate today as part of Pacific power company's energy network.
