When the first Europeans arrived in Oregon in 1792, they were met with hostility and violence. The area now known as Tigard was inhabited by the Klamath tribe of Native Americans and was not part of the Spanish or French colonies which grew up around them. The first European settlers who moved to Oregon were fur traders and missionaries. The first European to settle in what is now Tigard was John Jacob Astor, who arrived in 1827. He began trading with the local tribes and eventually built a large ranch on the edge of what is now Tigard. In 1849, two men named George Cowlitz and William Shorty discovered oil shale near present-day Portland. They tried to drill for oil but found that it was too difficult to work with the earth because of its tight formation. This led to their development of the Portland Oil Shale Company, which started production in 1850. The town of Tigard began growth around this time and soon became an important stop on wagon travel betweenPortland and Seattle. In 1854, James Fenton founded a newspaper called The Oregonian in Portland, which helped promote business development around Tigard. By 1870, Tigard had become an thriving industrial city with many businesses including a flour mill, saddlery shop, lumberyard, cigar factory and more. It also served as a transportation hub for goods moving from Portland to Seattle and other parts of Washington State. 2 years later Jens Jensen set up his own bakery at 7th Avenue SW & SW 54th Street after traveling across America trying to find a place where he could make good bread without using animal products (Jensen’s Bread). As Oregon gained statehood in 1909, some key changes took place within its borders: most notably, the arrival of waves of immigrants from southern Europe along with new ideas about democracy and individual opportunity led to increased political discussion inside Puget Sound State Park – home to much of Portland – throughout 1911-1912. As part of these discussions, representatives from various rural towns throughout northwestern Oregon met at Tiburon Creek Resort near present-day downtown Tiburon on July 10th 1912 to discuss potential solutions to problems such as overcrowding among city dwellers living near salt ponds while overlooking nature reserves; lack of access to education or health care; crime rates among frontier Idaho & Colorado farmers vs urbanites; etc.. Ultimately decided against were plans calling for development outside park boundaries into unincorporated areas around Portland – which would have resulted in increased congestion on park roadsides (and more money flowing out into developers' pockets). Tigard is located in the U.S. state of Oregon and was founded by James Wickersham on November 3, 1846 as Wickersham Landing. The town was named after General George Washington's landing at Tigard on February 14, 1797 during his campaign against British forces. In 1881, the town had a population of 514 and it grew to 1,000 by 1905. By 1920, the population had grown to 2,936 and it reached its peak in 1930 with 4,859 residents. However, the population declined over the next decade and by 1940 there were only 1,211 residents living in Tigard. In 1951 the town became a city and has continued to decline since then with a current population of 813 residents.
