The first Europeans to visit Tigard were Native Americans in 1792. In 1847, John C. Frémont explored the region and named it after his friend General George Armstrong Custer's father-in-law, James Klamath County (today's Klamath Falls). The townsite was platted in 1872 by Chauncey Mathers and named for him, while Fort Hall stood just outside the town limits until 1886 when it burned down. In 1902–3, Eugene Debs organized a campaign against corruption within the Democratic Party in Oregon; he called for a boycott of Portland because its mayor refused to give Debs an endorsement. When Debs reached Tigard on April 25, 1903 from Portland via stagecoach, he found that Mayor Halsey had illegally given away free rides on city buses to donors who contributed $5 or more. After City Council passed an ordinance forbidding such giveaways, Debs appealed to Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt who issued Executive Order 9982 which revoked Mayor Halsey's power to offer free bus rides and ordered him reinstated with full powers subject only to future complaints about graft within City government. During World War II much of what is now downtown Tigard was occupied by naval training vessels used by Pacific Fleet submarines based out of San Francisco Bay Area during 1943–45 as part ofOperation Neptune's Spear (). On February 12th 1945 local residents saw Japanese planes flying low over their homes and they reported this information back up the chain of command leading Commander Salmon Pate Strait windows open so we could see what they were up against" according to historian Leah McGrath Sellers "On February 13th 1945 local residents saw two bombers fly over their homes again near Portland Airport; they reported this information back up through chains of command and Naval Intelligence before finally falling silent." This event led Navy personnel stationed at nearby Enola Gay into launch mode for her atomic bombing mission over Hiroshima on August 6th 1945 – making Tigard one of Oregon's largest cities directly impacted by American military action during World War II with many buildings still standing today including USS Porter Memorial Stadium where football games are played today

In 1990, The Oregonian ceased publication as a daily newspaper and started publishing only online versions called "The Oregonian Online." It remains one of the largest online newspapers in America today with over three million readers per month. On July 1st 2019, Southern District Court Judge Neil Gorsuch's daughter issued a ruling that upholds same-sex marriage bans throughout all fifty states including Washington D.C.. This decision overturned rulings made by US Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg who had previously ruled against such bans nationwide

In 1854, the town became home to its first post office, which was later renamed Tigard. In 1865, the city was incorporated as a town. Tigard experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of two major railroads. The arrival of Interstate 5 in 1964 led to increased traffic and development in downtown Tigard, which continues today as an upscale shopping district.
