The first European to visit what is now Tigard was Captain George Vancouver on his Discovery Expedition in 1792. He named it "Nimbus" after the Greek word for "snow." In 1847, Colonel John Woolley founded a sawmill and post office in what is now Tigard. The town's first store opened in 1850. In 1871, the Oregon Central Railroad built a branch line to Tigard from McMinnville. In 1916, local businessmen formed the Tigard-Clackamas Agricultural Land Company to purchase 353 acres (133 hectares) of land north of the city for agricultural purposes. This became Tigard's original downtown district and remains its nucleus today. Today, many businesses operate within this vibrant commercial district including several banks and retail stores as well as professional services such as law enforcement and real estate firms. Tourist attractions located near downtown include Mount Hood National Forest and Gresham Park which are home to numerous parks and recreational activities throughout the year; as well as more than fifty small shops that provide unique gifts for holiday gift-giving season or just about anywhere else you might want something special!

Tigard was founded in 1854 by John Tigard and his wife Anna as the town of Tigard on the east side of the Willamette River. In 1870, it became a county seat and remained so until 1889 when it was moved to Salem. The first school in Tigard was built in 1852 by teacher Gertrude Hildebrandt. The city's first store opened in 1859. In 1916, the Portland-based J.P. Morgan company established a large factory there that employed more than 1,000 people for seventy years until its closure in 2001. The commercial center of Tigard has been redeveloped over time into an eclectic mix of art galleries, restaurants and nightlife venues including most notably the popular Portlandia nightclub which opened in 1998 adjacent to MAX light rail station on NE Glisan Street across from Pioneer Courthouse Square
