Tigard, Oregon is a small city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 30,814 at the 2010 census, making it the fastest-growing city in Oregon. Tigard is located on the banks of the Willamette River and has a diverse economy including manufacturing and agriculture. The city's largest employer is Boeing. The area that now Tigard was first settled by pioneer families in 1847. They named their settlement after US Representative John Tigar (1794-1852). In 1853, chemist George Washington Hardee moved to what is now Tigard from Salem, Oregon and founded Hardee's grocery store there. In 1870, entrepreneur Nicholas Meyer built a flour mill on the river bank for grinding wheat and other products for local markets. By 1907, there were over twenty businesses in downtown Tigard with a total payroll of $2 million dollars annually. In 1911 railroad president Eugene Vail built an addition to his old locomotive factory at Eighth Avenue and Columbia Street as the "Oregon Terminal Railroad" (ORT) Depot – one of only two such depots in America at that time – to serve as an interchange point for Amtrak trains coming into Portland from all directions. Oort Depot served both Amtrak and CSX until its closure in 1990; today it serves as headquarters for Pioneer Courthouse Square Company (Pioneer Square). During World War II, much of downtown Tigard was used as military barracks by USAAF pilots stationed at nearby Riddle Field; many of these buildings still stand today including barracks #1 which overlooks Interstate 5 near Pioneer Courthouse Square. On October 26th 1938 Mayor Ager announced that Tigard would become an incorporated city under state law effective January 1st 1939 with a population range from 10 to 100 thousand people inclusive! As part of this proclamation Ager also arranged for streetscape improvements and prepared funds for land acquisition necessary for incorporation purposes… On November 3rd 1939 City Council passed Resolution No 2 giving effect to Mayor Ager’s proclamation! The official incorporation date was January 1st 1940! With this event came new beginnings including: new streetscapes completed throughout town; establishment of proper boundaries around town including east/west alleyways between Downtown business districts & arterial streets; establishment of parks within walking distance or less than one mile away from homes; formation of tongues formed around Business Districts with specific goals/ Objective etc.; initiation of annexation process by various government entities thru Compulsory Acquisition process…. From humble origins following Mayor Ager’s proclamation through into more recent years we have flourished becoming known as “TheCity ontheRiverBanks”!
