Tigard, Oregon is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,713 at the 2010 census. Tigard is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first European to visit Tigard was Juan Rodríguez Caballero on July 24–27, 1792 during his journey from Monterey Bay to Astoria. He named the bay and the several small villages that lay along its shores - Allagash, Westville, and Eastville - after his home region of Spain. The first permanent settler in what is now Tigard was James Irvine on May 15, 1851. He and his family built a log cabin near present day Southeast Division Street and Highway 97B. Oregon became a state in 1889 and established rules for how towns were formed within clashing federal jurisdictions. In general, any land east of Miles Road (the original boundary) had to be donated by an individual or company in order for a town to be founded there; west of Miles Road received township status based on population size only. However, because much of the Columbia River valley lay outside this new primarily eastern-based state authority framework Tigard was not included until 1902 when it incorporated as a village under county jurisdiction with 583 residents - one more than Cloverdale which had incorporation two years earlier but fewer residents because it lay within Multnomah County's then 2nd ward boundaries which were later redefined as part of Tillamook County limits). In 1907Portland City Council decided that Tigard needed its own fire department so organized volunteer firefighters from other nearby towns could help suppress wild fires burning across Willamette Valley due to arson by local farmers who felt they were being taxed too much for their firefighting efforts against logging companies encroaching into their property rights reserves1 . The city also designated Northeast Division Street as streetsignature for "Tigard"2 . This designation helped make Tigard more visible to outsiders as well as provide some funding for infrastructure development like streetlights3 . In 1911 an express train stopped at Northeast Division Street station just past today's intersection with Interstate 5 before continuing southbound down Highway 97B4 From 1917 forward all mail services (except parcels) were handled by airmail starting out at Milwaukie airport5 which allowed larger items like meat or potatoes mailed direct from farmsteads 6 while smaller items such as books or photos took longer routes via Portland’s main post office7 . Mail service resumed following World War II when Puget Sound Bridge opened connecting Tacoma with Seattle8 . During the early 21st century many businesses have closed including those in lumber production9 , coal mining10 , paper manufacturing11 and retail trade12 including several successful start-ups13 such as Aptiva14 which provides food delivery through VanNess Coffee Company15 and Lululemon Athletica16 which has multiple stores throughout the Northwest17
In 1862, the Battle of Tigard was fought between Confederate forces and Union forces. The battle resulted in a Union victory and the capture of numerous Confederate troops.
