Tigard, Oregon is a town located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 24,022 at the 2010 census. Tigard is the most populous city in Multnomah County and the second most populous city in Oregon. The name Tigard comes from the Chinook word "tigi" meaning "a sharp piece of wood." The original settlers were Native Americans who arrived in what is now Multnomah County on horseback during the late 18th century. They named their community after Godfrey Tigard, an Englishman who had explored the area. In 1837, John C. Frémont established a post office at what is now Tigard and began to receive mail from California. By 1840, there were 30 residents living in Tigard. By 1865, when Multnomah County was created, Tigard had become one of its first communities and was still part of Tillamook Township but with voting rights granted to it by county commissioners under state law as required for township membership. The first mayor of Tigard was George Wickersham (1865-69). In 1923 Mayor Harry Goodspeed resigned over bribery charges that he faced while serving as Multnomah County recorder; Goodspeed's predecessor Jens Jensen had also been charged with bribery before that date but no action was taken against him because it fell within the purview of county government operations at that time. In 1951 Diskin Auerbach became mayor after being elected to that position by voters following a special election held after Mayor Harry Goodspeed's resignation due to bribery allegations two years earlier. Auerbach served four terms until his retirement effective December 3, 1976; he then served as Deputy Commissioner for Planning and Development for the Portland Bureau of Transportation until his death on October 25, 1984 aged 89 years old! At age 91 he became onlythe second Portland resident ever to reach 100 years old! An early process planner for many aspects of development in Portland during this era including plans for Interstate 5 through downtown Portland which would have sliced through much of central core neighborhood including today's Waterfront District - Diskin Auerbach played an important role early on leading planners through some very complex talks & compromises needed to get initial planning approvals throughout those discussions

OSU's main campus now occupies that area of the town. The discovery of oil in 1922 led to increased development in Tigard and other parts of the Willamette Valley; production reached its peak during World War II when it accounted for more than half of all Portland-area industrial output. After war ended, industry declined but steady economic growth has continued since then; Tigard is home to two major hospitals and several dozen smaller businesses.
