Tigard, Oregon is a town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. Tigard is one of the oldest towns in Oregon and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years. The first European to visit Tigard was Captain George Vancouver on his exploring voyage across North America in 1792. He named the junction of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers "Vancouver's Bay" after his captaincy. In 1847, John McLoughlin founded what became known as the City of Portland on the site of present-day Tigard. In 1853, Tigard's post office was established and it remained an important center until it closed in 1906 due to railroad competition. In that year, Portland superseded Tigard as the major city in Clackamas County. The town began to grow rapidly following World War II when Tulare Lake was drained and opened up for irrigation agriculture; this helped spur development along State Route 5 and Interstate 5 near where today's freeway exits are located. After many years of economic stagnation, progress began to resume in the early 2000s with the opening of new businesses and a resurgence in small-scale manufacturing activity which has since led to increased housing values within town limits as well as job growth throughout most of downtown Tigard proper – including several high-end apparel stores that have made it into recent gentrification zones near both Interstate 5 and NW Broadway Streets (the old downtown core). Tigard was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 24, 1805. The expedition moved from their base of Fort Hall in Montana to Oregon on November 15, 1804. They named their new settlement Tigard after John Tiggrant, one of the members of the expedition.
