The first person to settle in Tigard was American Fur trader John McLoughlin. He founded a trading post on property he purchased from George Vancouver in 1827. The post became known as McLoughlin's Station and later as part of what would become Portland. In 1841, McLoughlin's son James built a log cabin near where Tigard now stands and named it "Tigard". It was not until 1862 that the town site was platted out and renamed Tigard after Major General David Hunter, lieutenant general of militia during the Mexican-American War. During World War II, Tigard served as an important source of food for troops stationed throughout Northwest America due to its abundant agricultural resources. The city also played a significant role in rallying against Japanese aggression during World War II by creating Victory gardens that grew produce for soldiers stationed all over North America
Tigard was founded in 1876 by John Tigard and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the farm where they first settled. In 1924, it became a city.
