Tigard was founded in 1858 by John Tigard and his wife Anna. The town was named after the Danish island of Tigray, which is located in the central Mediterranean Sea. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a busy shipping route and its abundant resources such as timber, coal, and salt. By 1881, Tigard had become a village with a population of around 100 people. In 1916, the town was renamed Portland after Mayor George Bowen Portland of Oregon.
