Tigard, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Clackamas County. The population was 452 at the 2010 census. Tigard was founded by mistake as Mount Tabor in 1871 when surveyors mistook it for the nearby town of Tabor City. The first store opened in Tigard on October 17, 1872, and by 1870, there were six stores and a post office in the town. The name "Tigard" was chosen because it sounded like an Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." In 1881, Tigard had a population of 1100 people and had two churches, oneMethodist and one Congregationalist. It also had nine businesses that produced goods such as saddles, harnesses, hats, buttons, boots and mining equipment; five farmers did business in Tigard with land worth $1 million during its early years. In 1886-87 the city's first school opened with 75 students attending grades K-12; during this time Tigard also became home to one of Oregon's first newspapers - The Daily Democrat (founded September 10th 1889). In 1898-99 James Fenton built what is now known as Fenton Hall which served as both the city hall until 1907 when it burned down and replaced with present day City Hall Annex; during this time he also started construction on what would become Portland State University campus that would open in 1911. Additionally around this time many factories started up including Holman’s Clothing Manufacturing Company & Hormel Meatpacking Company making Tigard one of America’s leading manufacturing cities from about 1900 until World War II when many production plants closed down due to technological advances German aircraft being more efficient than American planes made war impossible to win even though resources were scarce
The first Europeans to arrive in Oregon were the Spanish in 1821. They named the area California, after their king, Ferdinand VII of Spain. The United States acquired Oregon in 1846 when it was part of Mexico.
