The Dalles is a small town in Oregon, located on the Snake River. It was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803 as a trading post and later became known for its mineral wealth. The town was first mentioned in 1607 when the local Native American tribe called the Klamath band of Indians camped there. In 1823, George Vancouver explored British Columbia and reported back to his superior, King George III, that he had seen an area rich in gold coins at the mouth of the Snake River. The next year, Vancouver set out from Dalles with two boats loaded with goods to find this new land of gold. After exploring for many days, he arrived at what is now downtown Dalles on July 25th, 1823. The town quickly grew due to its location and natural resources; it became one of America's leading mining towns during the 19th century. In 1847-48, Gold Rush fever swept through Oregon after prospectors discovered large caches of gold hidden throughout central Oregon and northern California. Thousands of people descended on Dalla during this time; some built simple wooden buildings while others erected more elaborate structures such as mill cabins or longhouses. By 1850, mostmining operations had stopped due to overpopulation and lack of resources; however, some small businesses continued until around 1900 when lumbering replaced mining as Oregon's leading industry
The Dalles was founded in 1846 by James W. Dawson and his wife, Catherine. The brothers John and Salmonbeck were also involved in the founding of the town. The first store was built on the east side of the river in 1847. In 1850, a post office was established and the name changed to Dalles in honor of General Philip Sheridan's visit to that area a few years earlier. The town grew rapidly during its early years and by 1860 there were over 100 people living there. Business flourished as steel production increased in nearby Corvallis and other mills began supplying townspeople with goods they could not produce themselves. By 1870, however, industry had declined and many residents moved away as new fields were developed along the river banks. The town experienced another growth period from 1875-1885 when mining recommenced along the riverbanks due to new finds of coal, silver, gold, iron ore and other minerals. This period is known for the creation of many jobs within the community including mechanics, smelters, foundry workers and more. However, by 1890 much of this activity had ceased due to changes in technology which made mining less profitable than it had been before. In 1916 Dalles became part of Multnomah County after it was split off from Oregon Territory under Oklahoma Jurisdiction law; Multnomah County contains all but 8 percent of Oregon's population according to 2015 estimates
