In 1877, John Charles Fremont founded The Dalles steamboat company to transport goods from Portland to The Dalles on the Columbia River. He built a dock at the mouth of the Willamette River so that his boats could be unloaded and reloaded without having to leave their landing site. This dock was instrumental in helping define Oregon as an agricultural state. In 1892, The Dalles post office was established, making it one of the first post offices in Oregon. It served as a transportation hub between The Dalles and nearby towns until 1915 when Interstate 5 was constructed linking Portland with Seattle. As traffic grew larger, The Dallesdeveloped into an important commercial center with its own police department and fire department. By 1945, TheDallesexist as an agricultural community with over 170 businesses providing services such as agriculture, fishing, lumbering, retail trade, manufacturing and transportation. The Dalles is a small town in Oregon located on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 5,839 as of the 2010 census. The name "Dalles" is derived from several word combinations: "dalel," meaning "valley," and "lea," meaning "stream." The early settlers near the present-day town were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1846. They named their new settlement after Håkan Dahlgren, aSwedish explorer who had helped find and map Oregon. As time passed, more English and other immigrants moved into the area, and by 1900 there were over 100 people living in Dalles. By 1910, however, the population had decreased to just under 5,000 because of various reasons including timber depletion and war departure. While some aspects of daily life have stayed much the same since then (such as Farmer's markets or independent restaurants), many aspects have changed due to rapid growth in nearby Portland during recent decades. The Dalles, Oregon is a town located in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was founded in 1871 by Jedediah Smith and his party as they traveled through the area on their way to the Themis Mountains. The name is derived from nearby Mount Hood, which was named for General David Carr (1768-1837), who led an expedition that discovered the mountain in 1802. The town began to grow slowly until it exploded during World War II when government officials decided to build a military post at the site. The town quickly became a thriving community with its own shopping malls and businesses. In recent years, however, the population has begun to decline and development has created some problems such as traffic congestion and limited access to public transportation.
The Dalles was founded in 1847 by George Dall and his brother Eli. The brothers built a log cabin on the banks of the Deschutes River. In 1848, they married Eliza Wayman and started a dairy business. They also began to raise chickens and pigs. The Dalles Railroad was completed in 1852, and the family moved to their current site, which they purchased in 1865. The first store opened in the town in 1865. A post office was established at the town in 1870, and it continued operation until 1914. The town name was changed to Portland in 1913.
