The Dalles, Oregon is known for its beautiful lakes and mountains. The town of Dalles was founded in 1853 by the family of Wm. H. Dalles, who homesteaded a tract of land on the south side of Mount Hood. The town grew rapidly during the gold rush era and soon became a stop on the railroad. In 1897, Mayor A.W. Sorenson dedicated a park in honor of his father-in-law, Captain John Cushman, who had served as an interpreter at Treaty 6 in 1855 between the United States and Na'vi Indians. The first Europeans to arrive in present-day Oregon were traders from California in 1821. They named their new settlement "Dalles," after General Joseph Dallen who had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). By 1852, the population had swollen to over 1,000 people and it was renamed Salem when a post office was established there that year. In 1863, when The Dalles became a U.S. military post under military occupation during the American Civil War (1861-65), it was Named Fort Stevens after Maj.-Gen.(later Lt.-Gen.) Israel Stevens who served as Commandant ofFort Stevens near Portland. In 1907 Fort Stevens were destroyed by fire which destroyed most of downtown Salem but also left behind an excellent example of cast iron architecture called "The Battery." Today visitors can visit this reconstructed fort through interpretive trails starting at Main Street/Oregon Route 99 and traveling eastward to Battery Park before ending at Jefferson Boulevard/Oregon Route 97 outside of town limits; or they can drive out onto Interstate 5 just past milepost 20 and park beside what is now Pioneer Cemetery before continuing on foot or bike down Old US Highway 97 northeast to old US Highway 10E where you will end up at Community Gardens next door which fronts on old US Highway 97N between milespost 24 - 26

One reason why Dalles continued to grow rapidly during those early years was its location on navigable water routes connecting Portland with Seattle and other major cities across North America. Many mills, factories, stores and other businesses sprang up around this period throughout northwestern Portland suburbia; many still exist today within walking distance of downtown or along Interstate 5 heading eastward into neighboring Washougal County
