The Dalles is a town in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,553 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Willamette River near the junction of U.S. Route 97 and Oregon Route 523. Dalles was founded by Washburne Indians in 1847 as part of the Treaty of Gresham which ended the Multnomah War. The town was named for General David Silliman who had fought in that conflict and later served as Lieutenant Governor of Oregon Territory. In 1865, settlers started to arrive to this area and formed a small community called "Dalles" which grew into an important commercial center due to its location on the river and its access to timberlands. In 1885, residents petitioned Congress for permission to build a railroad through their town so they could sell lumber products from their forests and increase their income. This request was granted with exception of one mile (1 km) along both banks of the river where it would cross under US 97/Oregon Route 523; this portion would be built as an additional streetcar line linking Dalles with nearby Milton and Milwaukie. The original tracks were laid down in 1887 but were never completed because of financial problems caused by deforestation in the region around Portland which had begun occurring about that time also. In 1907, Dalles became home to America's first wind power plant when two older turbines were erected on property donated by Jenson & Co., a northwestern lumber company whose mills lay just east of town across the Willamette River from where it discharged into the river below). When all upstream mills closed during World War II, Dalles began exporting processed wind energy destined for use within North America - its first such export since 1915!
