Kennedy married Sarah Joanne Russell and moved to The Dalles with her. Here he established his business as a rifle manufacturer and retailer. Over time, the Kennedy family prospered and began importing guns from Europe as well as manufacturing their own firearms products. In 1934 Sarah Joanne passed away after a long life of service to the community; John F. Kennedycontinued running his business until his death in 1978. In her memory, the company now operates as an independent brand named "John F."Kennedy Firearms Incorporated." In 1938 Harry Stoneman opened a gunsmith shop on Main Street in The Dalles which quickly became known for its high-quality firearms repairs and work on classic handguns such as Colt's revolvers and Smith & Wesson revolvers. As gun parts sales grew throughout Oregon during World War II shortages began to develop due to restrictions placed by the government on military procurement of ammunition and other items necessary for war production. It was this scarcity that led Harry Stoneman to develop what is now considered one of Oregon's most significant firearm businesses - Gun Parts Unlimited (GPU).
