The Dalles, Oregon is a small town located in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. The name "Dalles" is an anglicized version of the Malheur River's Klamath Falls village, which likely derived from the local word "dalley." In 1847, three men named John C. Fremont, James K. Polk and William S. Harty decided to travel upriver to find a new route for the United States railroad. They selected a spot near present-day Dalles because it offered good farmland and water supplies as well as access to timber and gold resources. The first post office was established at Dalles on March 16, 1847. The town began developing around this time with several stores, churches, schools and other businesses opening up in what is now central Dalles. By 1850, many people had moved into the area and it became known as "the most isolated community on the Columbia River". In 1865, Alderman Wm Leland granted township status to Dalles which doubled its population over just 10 years! During World War II (1939-1945), many residents worked in Army camps located within or close to nearby geographic areas such as Tillamook and Burns Lake while others went off to serve in military campaigns overseas or during peacetime mobilization periods back home. After World War II ended there were larger waves of refugees coming through town searching for new homes after decades of discrimination by American society against those who looked European or Asian in comparison... thus beginning what would be known as 'The Chinese Era'. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place around downtown including construction of a new elementary school (now Dewey Elementary School), retail development including restaurants/stores along Third Street SE., a small park adjacent to First Street SE., and more residential developments surrounding First Street SE.. DALLES incorporation took place on November 12th 1888 pursuant to an act passed by the State Legislature at that time authorising such action with Mayor Jno Fenton serving as both incorporator and first official head of municipal government; acting trustees being Thos Naylor (vice president) lbaugh & Geo Matson (& Geo Fenton’s son). It was not until 1907 when Dalles Academy opened under charter from Portland Female College that educational opportunities really commenced for children living hereabouts... At any rate we are numbered amongthis commercial center city type towns having about 1800 inhabitants within our limits today
