The Dalles, Oregon is a small town located in south-central Oregon. It is bordered by the Columbia River on the east, and the Snake River on the west. The community was founded by pioneer families in 1887 as part of what became known as the Dalles Mining District. The name is derived from a nearby stream, which locals called "Dalley" because of its deep banks. When railroad construction began through central Oregon in 1870, transportation options for goods and people were limited. So, entrepreneurs organized to build an railroad from Portland to Lake Oswego. They named their new town after General John A. Dahlgren, who had helped lead operations of that rail line. The first post office opened in 1887 and soon developed into a small farming community with several buildings and about 25 residents. The Dalles Mining District was established near present day Wasco County on November 3rd, 1887 with £50 worth of gold discovered at Gold Hill along the right bank of the now dry Snake River (then known as Clearwater Creek). Before long, other miners had followed suit and quickly erected mines throughout what would become known as the Dalles mining district. In 1899 coal mining replaced gold mining as the primary industry in this area; however many old mines remain operational today including those built by Donnellson Brothers Coal Company in 1916-1917 following completion of their $100 million mine project within two years! In 1913 local school districts merged to form one larger school district - Willamette Valley School District #1 - making The Dalles one of its most populous communities! Over time more homes have been added to this growing community but much remains unchanged from when it first emerged during early 20th century America’s Golden Age!
