In 1825 Nicholas Cage set up a stagecoach stop on what is now called Dalles Boulevard in present-day Multnomah County for his passengers and cargo. By 1830 much of what is now Multnomah County had been surveyed by Captain George Miller, who named it for Major General James Kapp as part of a land grant to him from King George III. A post office was established at Dalles in 1838, but no town grew up around it until after World War II when construction began on the present city center and other downtown areas. Dalles was incorporated as a town in 1907 and became an independent city in 1959. The population reached its peak at 71,595 during the 1990s but has since declined due to suburbanization and desegregation within Multnomah County; however, it remains one of Oregon’s most culturally diverse cities with significant concentrations of African Americans (15% or more), Latinos (10%), Asians (5%), Native Americans (4%) and gay/lesbian/bisexual people (3%). The Dalles Dam provides water storage forMultnomah County while also providing recreational opportunities downstream including swimming, fishing, boating and hiking; also there are several small businesses near the dam which provide services such as plumbing, grocery shopping etc..
