In 1893 local physician JOSEPH PARKER opened one of two new hospitals in North America - THE HOSPITAL FOR THE ADULT population OF NORTH AMERICA - which became an international sensation! The town prospered even during World War I when many industries closed due to lack of munitions production; nevertheless its population fell to about 50 by 1921 but it has since grown again with many new businesses development including: healthcare services such as family health clinics and mental health centers; education; tourist industry with several restaurants/bars/cafés; preservation activities for various buildings including: pioneer homespun clothing stores;various arts & crafts outlets; etc.; as well as more traditional retail establishments like hardware stores and grocery stores
