The Dalles is an unincorporated community in Oregon, United States. It lies on the Columbia River and contains the ruins of a Spanish mission built in 1846. The name "Dalles" is Anglo-Saxon for " clearing ". It had been part of the Deschutes County, Oregon Territory before it was organized as a town in 1907. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now The Dalles was Captain George Vancouver on May 14, 1792, when he set out from California with his flagship HMS Discovery to explore and map the Northwest coast of North America. He named many places along the way including Juan de Fuca Strait and Victoria Land after members of his exploration party or their families. When he reached The Dalles on July 21, 1792, he anchored near present-day Portland to rest his ship and supplies before continuing northward. In 1846 Mexican traders were trading at Fort Nisqually on Puget Sound when they heard about gold deposits downriver from what is now The Dalles by Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican–American War (1848–49). A team led by David Griffiths found considerable gold while exploring below sea level in April 1850 but did not report it to anyone because they thought it would be too difficult to try and get back upriver to bring topsoil back up to their site without getting into trouble with Mexico City In 1862 Colonel John McLoughlin established a military post at Nisqually which became Fort McLoughlin upon its completion; however, no gold ever came ashore here until 1898 when prospectors discovered small amounts of gold around McNair Mill shafts! In 1896 USGS surveyor Jens Christensen determined that there are significant hills overlying all those workings so a new surface assay plant was started here soon afterwards allowing us todayto measure just over 4 million ounces (1 million metric tons) of GOLD FROM THIS WELL! An interesting footnote about this discovery – although Jens Christensen accurately estimated how much GOLD there actually was in these workings (and correctly guessed that some had already beenmined), because American industry displaced Mexican mining operations during most of this period WE ALSO RECOVERED MORE THAN 2 MILLION DOLLARS IN GOLD FROM THESE HILLS! So if you’re looking for “the big one” consider crossing your fingers and hoping against hope that somebody steps up to claim responsibility for all THAT GOLD! The townsite oftheDalles was platted in 1851 by James K. Polk, who named it for General Andrew Jackson’s brother-in-law Moses Lincoln Dallen. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant attacked the Confederate forces at Fort Donelson on the Nez Perce River near present-day Portland. As part of his advance upriver, Grant's army passed through the town oftheDalles on its way to Fort Stevens; when he arrived there late that night, most of the population had already fled to safety in nearby towns. The fort remained standing until it was sacked by Union troops in 1865; however, some shells from these attacks still stand today within View Street Cemetery across from the old hotel which burned down during World War II The discovery of copper ore at Butteville in 1863 led to an increase in mining activity around the town oftheDalles; sawmills were built soon afterward and a flour mill opened in 1875. By 1890 much of what is now downtownwas constructed as a result of this industry; between 1889 and 1916 about 1,500 houses were built hereaboutsouthwest cornerof Prospect Avenue and First Street between Main and Taylor streets (now part of University Drive). The Dalles, Oregon history begins in 1847 when the U.S. Congress created the town of The Dalles as a military post on the banks of the Willamette River. The post was named after General David Walker and his men who fought against Native Americans in what is now Oregon. In 1878, The Dalles became an incorporated town and voted to add a name - Portland - to its municipal documents. Portland was formally incorporated as a city on January 15, 1899.
