When Lincoln announced his candidacy for president on April 14th 1860, many Americans were disappointed with his lackof experience or any political background; however, Miles stood behind him 100%. On May 6th 1860 Stuyvesant published A New History Of The American Party System: From George Washington To Abraham Lincoln – Volume 2: A Statement On The Causes And Consequences Of Our Political Order By An Americanist [published posthumously], which outlined how Republicans had been cheated outof power by their Democratic opponents throughout history; this statement set off a firestorm within their own party that would later lead to Lincoln's election victory on November 4th 1860

In response to these challenges, Governor John Atherton orderedStHelens residents to leave their homes by May 1st that year en masse without any refund or compensation! Many people decided to stay behind, however; some turned out to be among the first European settlers who worked hard developing what is now downtown Sthelens into one of America's most vibrant communities during the late 19th century- early 20th century period known as "the golden age." In 1847, the town of St. Helens was founded on a small islet in the Columbia River. The first post office was established in 1848, and by 1860, the population had reached 350 people. In 1862, a stagecoach became available to bring goods from Portland to St. Helens, which helped spur development of the town. By 1865, it had become an important transportation hub for Oregon. The towns growth stopped due to Civil War involvement; however, it resumed after the war ended. In 1932, St. Helens became part of the new Portland metropolitan area and has grown more significant since then as a commercial center and industrial city with a large university presence
