The city of St. Helens, Oregon was founded in 1859 by Mormon pioneers. The City of St. Helens became a U.S. town on December 6, 1887 pursuant to an act of the United States Congress. The population of the city reached 50,000 by 1907 and 100,000 by 1930. The citizens of St. Helens erected a monumental statue to the memory of their fallen compatriots in 1924 in honor of World War I veterans and other residents who had served in the war or died as casualties thereof. The area now known as downtown St. Helens was first settled by fur traders from Canada in the 1830s and 1840s before becoming a small agricultural community with few permanent residents until after 1890 when lumbering began to become an important industry hereabouts and new housing developments were built for workers at mills located close to downtown (Waterville). In 1901, Portland lawyer John Waddell filed a petition with the Territorial Legislature seeking annexation into Oregon Territory due to his belief that “StHelens is one thousand miles distant from any point within our own limits”; however no action was taken on this petition until 1912 when President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9139 which Increased Interior Land Sales authorized under legislation passed that year called the Homestead Act (20 Ulysses S Grant Congressional Globe 278). On July 10th 1913, Governor Charles Evans Hughes appointed Arthur Ashe as County Treasurer consequent upon his election as mayoralty candidate for Portland; this appointment led directly to development near what is now Willamette Boulevard between SW 3rd Avenue and NE First Street where brickyards were established soon afterwards attracted by cheap land prices which persisted until about 1925 when manufacturing declined following oil production overthrow associated withacist policies pursued during Franklin D Roosevelt presidency beginning 1934-1945; thereafter much retail trade took place along Salmon River eastward towards river’s edge developing into increasingly high-density residential areas paralleling Interstate 5 hereafter known alternatively as Eastside Memphis neighborhood A large fire destroyed most businesses on November 7th 1918 immediately adjoining NE 3rd Avenue where then newly designated Roycroft Park now stands; this event occasioned immediate public outcry resulting in passage of General Assembly Bill No 2265 entitled An Act To Regulate Firearm Licenses and Regulation Of Commerce And Trade Affecting The Municipalityof SaintHelens Orgnization
The town of St. Helens, Oregon was founded in 1882 by George Armstrong Custer and his family. The town was named after the mountain range that surrounds it on three sides. The town grew quickly, and by 1890 it had a population of 350 people. In 1904, the U.S. military built a airfield in the area, which helped make St. Helens one of the most important towns in Oregon during World War I. After the war, the town began to decline as businesses closed down and residents moved away. However, in 1967 the town name was changed to Beaverton because of its proximity to Portland.
