In the summer of 1927, a group of men working on a new oil pipeline in St. Helens, Oregon decided to make their own earmuffs. They came up with the idea of using leather bags filled with rice, beans, and other snacks as insulation from the sun and wind. The Earmuff Company was founded that year. The city of St. Helens, Oregon was founded in 1868 by the brothers John and Josephine Huffman. The Huffmans were among the first white settlers in what is now known as the Portland area. They moved to the area around present-day St. Helens in 1868, and began construction on a house that would become their home. The Huffmans were also among the first to grow crops near what is now downtown St. Helens. In 1873, they married Anna Jane Hanson, who was from British Columbia and had recently arrived in Oregon to join her family. Anna Jane became pregnant with their first child, which led to them moving back to Portland for baby-sitting services while Anna Jane worked on building their new home. In 1880, John Huffman died of a heart attack at his home; his wife continued to live with her children and grandchildren until her death in 1943. The City of St. Helens was incorporated on December 4, 1886 under the name of Portland Incorporated; its charter stated that “the object hereinof shall be promote community development through commerce and industry” (Stroud & Hardesty 1895). Portland quickly emerged as one of Oregon’s leading cities due to its wide variety of businesses and industries: meatpacking plants, lumberyards, breweries, mining operations – even an opera house! After years of growth and prosperity, however, Portland experienced a dramatic decline during World War II when many manufacturing jobs left town for war production centers outside Oregon or California (Dorf 1970). However, since then there have been periodic surges in business activity – most notably when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos moved his company from Seattle to St helens in 2017 – making it one of OR’s marquee cities once again (Lench 2018). Today much credit goes towards urban planners like Rick Stout who designed much of downtown Saint helens along with revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Tim Burgess which are seen as having reversed some OFW [Oregonian] Community Development Districtal defaults dating back several decades ago ̶ including two high profile blighted areas adjacent to MAX light rail stations - once known as ‘Pioneer Square’ ̶ redeveloping them into mixed use neighbourhoods anchored by boutique shops/restaurants/entertainment venues/office buildings etc., parts still popular today but others less so given current market conditions
The first white settlers in the area that is now St. Helens, Oregon were Hiram and Lydia Green who arrived in 1847. They built a cabin on the east side of the river for themselves and their two children. The cabin was destroyed by a flood in 1850 but was rebuilt by the Green family. In 1855, Augustus Gray purchased land from Hiram and Lydia Green, which he used to build a mill on the south side of the river. The mill became known as the Grays’ Mill because it was run by Augustus Gray and his sons John and George. The mill produced flour, meal, butter, cheese, eggs and lumber for buildings in St. Helens and other parts of Oregon. By 1907, the mill had been closed down due to lack of business opportunities.
