Despite these challenges, however, St. Helens continued to grow steadily throughout the 1870s and 1880s thanks largely to its role as a transportation hub for goods moving between Portland (then known as “the City of Roses”) and points northward along the Oregon Trail

In 1858, mining operations reached a peak with production totaling 463 tons per day; however, by 1861 production had fallen to just 25 tons per day due to oversaturation of resources.
