When first built, the St. Helens School District was one of the most important in Oregon. With a population of only 2,500 people, it served as a model for public education and taught children from pre-K to grade 12. The district’s library was also one of the largest in the state. In 1953, two men by the name of Hargrave and Smith started a small business called “Hargrave & Smith Optics” in town. They were enthusiasts of optical technology and wanted to help share that love with others in their community. Starting out with just a few products, they soon had a large following among other local businesses and individuals who appreciated their quality products and services. Over time, Hargrave & Smith became known for their innovative design and high standards for customer service. In 1977, they opened up an annex on SW Broadway which housed their manufacturing operations until 2000 when they relocated to Stonington, Connecticut where they continue to operate today as an independent manufacturer of optics products

The city of St. Helens, Oregon was founded in 1855 by George Vancouver and named for the Helens River located near the city. The first store in town was built on the corner of Main and John Streets. By 1888, there were ten businesses in town with a population of just under 100 people. The first telephone line arrived in 1899, and by 1903 there were fifteen businesses with a population of over 500 people. In 1909, the hospital opened with twenty-four beds. In 1916, an armory was built to serve as local defense against Native American attacks. The armory continued to be used until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. By 1925, there were thirty-six businesses with a population of over 1,000 people. Although its population is only a small fraction of that of Portland, Oregon, St. Helens has a history and culture as rich as the city it stands in. The town was founded by Christians who fled persecution in Russia during the early 1800s. The first settlers were farmers and their families, but over time they developed into a commercial town with businesses including a sawmill and grist mill, two hotels, several churches, and a school. By the late 1800s, St. Helens had become an important transportation stop on the Oregon Trail because of its location at the junction of two major roads. In 1907, when the area around Portland was renamed Multnomah County after Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase (the namesake for Multnomah Falls), St. Helens became part of what is nowPortland proper. The downtown area today contains more than 100 buildings from yesteryear dating back to when most of the town was built on what is now Uptown Street between Third and Fourth Avenues. The architecture here reflects both Russian and American influences; examples include Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style buildings such as those on Third Avenue and Second Street among others. Today many people in Portland refer to themselves as "St-Helensians," or simply "Oregonians." The economy of St-Helens has been diverse throughout its history; today it primarily relies on services provided by government agencies such as healthcare (particularly public health clinics) and education (particularly universities). However, there are also some small businesses that have survived since the early days of this community: computer companies like Microsoft Windows Update Service LLC., bicycle shop Rickenbacker Cycles Inc., pet store Green Gables Cattery & Dog House Ltd., restaurant Noodle Soup Inc., and flower shop White Buttons florists are just a few examples from recent years that have thrived thanks to their unique products or service offerings
The history of optical accessories can be traced back to the earliest days of photography. Early photographers used lenses, glass plates and other devices to create images. These tools were not perfect, and required some form of light amplification in order to create a successful image. One early solution was to use mirrors to reflect sunlight onto a camera lens. This system was known as the Oppenheimer Method. The first true digital cameras were designed with this mechanic in mind, and allowed users to take pictures without any light amplification whatsoever. However, the early days of digital photography were not without their challenges. For one, mirror systems could only be used for short exposures because they required lengthy exposure times in order to create an image that looked good on paper. Additionally, mirror systems could only be used with certain types of cameras – such as those created by Eastman Kodak – which made taking pictures for publication difficult and sometimes impossible. Ultimately, these limitations led to the development of photo printing technology that allowed users to take pictures using less light than necessary in order to achieve high-quality results. As digital photography evolved over time, so too did its ability to accept different types of optics and attachments (known collectively as photo equipment). Today’s photo gear is much more sophisticated than it was 30 years ago, and companies like Nikon have come up with ingenious ways to add extra features or improve functionality even further when using their products. St. Helens is also home to several museums including the Pacific Northwest Museum of Art, which was established in 1954. The museum features paintings, sculptures, and other art from throughout Northwest Oregon and Canada. The city also hosts several annual events such as the Oktoberfest and Christmas celebrations.

By 1850, St. Helens had more than 100 residents, and it played an important role in Oregon's history as a border state. In 1862, when parts of Montana were annexed into Oregon, St. Helens became part of the new state. In 1924, when Cascade Mountains were divided between Oregon and Washington, St. Helens retained its own county government and remained an important community until 1970 when it merged with neighboring Linn County to form Clackamas County
