This led to increased trade and economic development in St. Helens, which continued until 1945 when it was destroyed by an earthquake that killed over 120 people. Today, much of what once stood in St. Helens are gone but part of the downtown area remains standing as a testament to its history.
The first white people to live in the area that is now St. Helens, Oregon were the Hidatsa in 1847. The town was named for General David C. Hood, who had been a military leader during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, gold was found near the town and it became a center of mining activity. By 1865, the town had grown to over 1,000 residents and it adopted a Methodist church as its main building.
