The St. Helens, Oregon History Museum is a nonprofit educational institution that preserves and interprets the history of the city of Portland, Oregon. The museum was founded in 1984 by then-Mayor Elmo Frye with the goal of documenting Portland's unique cultural and historical contributions to the region. Portland's first white settlement began on what is now downtown Portland on October 14, 1846 as a small group of men led by Captain David Rogers under the leadership of George Parker explored what would become what is now called North Portland. The site they selected for their outpost was just east of present day Pioneer Courthouse Square. In 1847, the U.S. government granted land to James Klamath County for a new county seat – Stilsonville (later renamed Saint Helens). The town was platted in 1849 by John Fitch and named after Mount Hood which dominates most of present day Portland. In 1861, when Stilsonville became part of Multnomah County, it passed through its hands several times before settling into one continuous municipality with its own government until 1922 when it became a part of Portland proper. A few years later in 1872 an Act was passed giving an appropriation for capital improvements within “the limits laid down” by Congress including “a public courthouse at said place”; this courthouse would eventually serve as the nucleus around which Parkrose began to form around 1907 near NW Sixth Avenue and Holgate Street Northeast. At this time there were only two blocks wide streets running northeast-southwest within what we know today as Downtown Portland - Burnside Street ran from Southwest Fourth Avenue along Burnside Road all the way to Interstate 5 (then known as Starkweather Boulevard), Commercial Street ran from 1st Avenue Southeast along Morrison Road Northeast all the way to Southeast 6th Avenue (now SE Powell Boulevard),SW Yamhill Streets terminated at First or Second Avenues (now SW 3rd Ave.),NE Hawthorne Streets terminated at Willamette Blvd.,Naito Parkway ran between NE 10th Ave./NW Couch Blvd./NE Capitol Hill Rd./SE Ankeny Place/Washoe Street/E Longnutt Place E) and finally NE Division street extended eastward beyond 2nd Ave.–this block westward had only 4 lanes width wise with 2 lanes each widthwise
St. Helens, Oregon was founded on July 3, 1868, by James K. Polk and Mary A. Polk as a Mormon colony in what is now Washoe County, Nevada. The town was named for the biblical city of Heliapolis (Hebron) in Palestine. The first white settler at St. Helens was John Wesley Smith, who arrived on horseback in 1869. In 1870 the town had a population of about 50 people and two stores; it began to grow rapidly thanks to a gold rush that started nearby in 1865 and ended three years later when the alluvial soil gave out under the crush of expectations caused by discoveries in California and Nevada.
