St. Helens has several notable landmarks including Mount St Helens National Park and Mount Washington Observatory which are both located within its boundaries; also included within its boundaries are Butte Lake (containing Lake Oswego), Geyserville and Josephine Lakes (the latter two containing geothermal hot springs), scenic drives named for famous Oregonians like Clemenceau Drive and Timberline Drive; Andaman Sea beach located about 20 minutes away west of downtown; Mt Bachelor ski resort situated in nearby Wasco County; mineral rights originally held by Myrtilus Eddy who mined gold there beginning in 1887 before becoming one of history's earliest ranchers (and also home to Greasy Spoon restaurant); The Heritage Museum adjacent to Municipal Hall which features interactive exhibits about aspects of local life from 1870s until present day along with period artifacts from that time period; Asotin College - an educational institution providing undergraduate degrees in arts & sciences - located immediately east of downtown serving students from throughout Multnomah County including portions of Hillsboro Village adjacent thereto; Andaman Sea beach bar & grill serving fresh seafood outfitted with ocean views across Puget Sound In recent years St. Helens has become known for its annual Haleakala International Festival which celebrates Hawaiian culture through music, art, food etc., taking place over several weekends during late fall/early winter months preceding Easter week at Haleakala National Park starting October 1st each year since 1978

The first European settlers in St. Helens, Oregon arrived in 1851. The town was founded by a group of Methodist pastors and businessmen who hoped to create a new religious community on the edge of what was then the most remote region of Oregon. The town quickly became a major commerce center and education center for the region, and its citizens developed an important local political voice. In 1862, following the American Civil War, St. Helens rose up against U.S. military occupation and sided with Confederate forces. The town's defenders were eventually driven out by Union forces and the town fell into disrepair until it was reborn as an agricultural community in the early twentieth century. Today, St. Helens is home to a number of small businesses and restaurants, as well as a number of historical buildings including the former Stake Hall building and the original courthouse.
