The name “St. Helens” means “place where a heathen altar was erected” in the Chinook language and it has been said that this site was chosen because of its location on an ancient volcano known for its destructive power. The first Europeans to visit what is now St. Helens were fur traders from British Columbia who visited in 1818. They named the place after Saint George, Patron saint of England, but no such shrine ever materialized and no one knows why. In 1842, General David Powell expedition passed through this area while scouting for a new route to California over the mountains and they called the village by this name which stuck until 1853 when they changed it to Grantsville after James Grant, a United States Senator from Oregon. In 1861, during the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his troops to burn down some villages in what is now Sturgis County because their citizens had not yet surrendered unconditionally to Union forces under General Don Carlos Buell. This event became known as “the burning of Sturgis” which started a decade long series of events that led up to World War II here in central Oregon! During World War II many people lost their lives due to bombing raids by Japan on St. Helens and other parts of central Oregon – including Marlowe Ridge near present day Reid City – so much so that local officials decided to rename allimportant bridges after military personnel who died during conflict or who served alongside our military during peace time (eagleBridge being one such example). For many years afterwards there was only one bridge bearing that particular name: That over Interstate 5 just east of Stinson Beach! Today there are severalbridge names associated with both wars here in central Oregon – eagletrack/Hwy 99E being one such example – but no longer does anyone use Bridge No 1! What happened? The answer may be found buried deep within history books…or beneath those abandoned mining towns along Highway 97 south of Sisters which were also destroyed by Japan during its war against America! closer inspectionreveals evidence that two major dams built by Ginter Mining Company near Butte were actually completed prior to Japanese occupation; however little attention was paid to these important developments because Washington State politics intervened militarily at this crucial juncture! When American forces invaded Japan shortly thereafter things quickly went awry as Ginter Mining Company refused any surrender offers even though its property lay within range of numerous airfields Stanford Field (just outside Coos Bay) and Multnomah Falls Airfield (near Burns), both used extensively by Imperial Japanese planes flying missions over western North America….Ginter then helped lead an aborted attack on Umpqua Dam early September 1945……..all these construction activities occurred months before!! It wasn’t until nearly 50 years later when historians finally began paying attention that we learned about these important historical events…..and discovered that Ginter had actively participated in Allied efforts against Japan right up until she formally capitulated!!!!

In spite of these challenges, however, there are some potential positive aspects to St. Helens’ history that deserve further attention: 1) it was one of Oregon’s earliest cities; 2) it played an important role in developing both American society and local culture; 3) its downtown retains a significant amount of historical significance; 4) there is still occasional interest in returning to traditional values within the city limits; 5) while not always easy or popularly accepted among locals (particularly those living near Interstate 5), St. Helens has enjoyed some recent successes including becoming one of Oregon’s most vibrant cities – albeit with continuing challenges including high levels of traffic congestion and environmental pollution
The area now known as St. Helens, Oregon was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in the 18th century. The region was named for Saint Helens, a bishop of Rome who died in 1753. In 1847, gold was discovered near present-day St. Helens and other mining operations began in the area. The population of St. Helens grew rapidly from its original few hundred people to over 10,000 by 1860. By 1870, the town had become an important commercial center with a large population of Native Americans and white settlers. During World War II, St. Helens played a significant role as a munitions manufacturing center and production line for military supplies such as gasoline and ammunition. In 1945, the town was destroyed by an artillery attack that followed US occupation of Japan following the war's end. Today, much of what once stood in St. Helens have been replaced by housing developments or businesses related to nearby Mount Hood National Forest
