St. Helens, Oregon is a small town located in the Snake River Valley of the southern Cascade Mountains of Oregon. The first European to visit this area was Father Francisco de la Salle on December 17, 1769. He named the area "Esquimalt" after his hometown of Esquimalt, British Columbia. On May 8, 1853, St. Helens was incorporated as a city and had a population of only 375 people. In 1957, St. Helens became an independent county and has since grown to over 22,000 residents. The name "St. Helens" comes from two settlements in the area: Halkin's Ferry and Plummer's Ferry Road which were both used by fur traders for transportation between the salt mines at Lava Bogs and the surrounding townships in what is now Clark County.[1] The discovery of gold in Nevada during the mid-19th century spurred exploration throughout much of northwestern U.S., including what is now Oregon and Nevada; however, no significant gold discoveries were made in or around St. Helens until 1849 when prospectors discovered gold coins at Halkin's Ferry Road.[2] This initial discovery led to increased demand for goods transported via these roads so traffic congestion that developed along them quickly became an annoyance for local citizens who would have to wait long periods for their turn at the depot or take alternative routes home because there was not enough space available at either stoplight or intersection.[3] Eventually, a bypass was constructed through downtown St. Helens which relieved some congestion but did not eliminate it completely[4]. In 1875–76 Captain George Vancouver explored downriver from Portland (now Portland) aboard HMS Discovery; he mapped much of what is now NW Oregon including parts of today's StHelens County while on his way southward along the Willamette River system towards California[5]. Upon his return trip upstream late that year he reported finding high quality copper ore near present day Salem,[6] thus beginning commercial mining operations in northwest Oregon outside any known deposit before then! At first these efforts were subsistence-driven with men utilizing local resources such as coal and timber until advances came in technology during World War II when various metals became available for more efficient production due to wartime shortages caused by WWII allied bombing raids against Germany[7]. Fremont discovered and claimed the land for the United States. The claim was disputed by France and Mexico, so it was decided to make a Donation of Land Act in 1850, which gave away 2 million acres (8,000 km2) of Oregon country to America. The name "Oregon" was chosen because it would be one of only two U.S. states named for geographical features on opposite sides of the continent: California on the west side and Maine on the east side.
