There is no one place in the United States that has more memory of a devastating fire that consumed entire blocks of downtown St. Helens, Oregon, than the city’s namesake. The event occurred on May 25, 1980 and left at least seventy-five people dead and hundreds more injured. A $25 million dollar fund has been created in St. Helens to commemorate the tragedy. The fire began as an uncontrolled minor blaze in the evening of May 24th within the boundaries of what was then Pacific Gas & Electric Company property. By morning, it had grown into a massive inferno that had overcome several buildings and was threatening to consume downtown St. Helens entirely. In just four hours, the flames had reached up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and were consuming 300 acres of forest outside of town limits. The plumes of black smoke billowed above downtown like never before, setting off alarms across Portland and Seattle which could be heard all over America as reports arrived back home about this relentless inferno tearing through neighborhoods dear to their hearts… Throughout Saturday night there was intense activity as firefighters fought the flames with limited resources while citizens worked tirelessly to help those they could find: children playing near fireside chats; husbands helping wives carry heavy shopping bags out from their homes; fathers tending barbershops; mothers ferrying kids off to school….the list goes on and on….. As dawn broke Sunday morning, firefighters were still fighting hard against extremely high temperatures and thickETSFRAMES (extinguishing agents) were needed constantly as chunks of building collapsed onto passerby below who tried futilely to leap out alive only for themselves to die instantly when these materials metamorphosed into hot coals beneath their feet! With communities all aroundSt helens reeling from this catastrophic event- both locals who knew what it meant for their neighborhoods AND visitors coming in droves- recovery began quickly but tragically unevenly throughout much of rural Oregon…..In short order community leaders organized gallon jugs filled with money donated by individuals or businesses alike “to help our neighbors rebuild” following what proved unequivocally one of America’s most calamitous natural disasters ever……Today there are numerous memorials scattered throughout Downtown St helens honoring those lost during1980 including such landmarks as Pacific Gas & Electric Company Tower which now houses a museum dedicated exclusively to the victims plus many other smaller businesses/residential areas considered critical during that fateful day……This is also true for neighboring towns such as Corvallis where large portions (though not all) have been rebuilt since 1980……………………………………….st helens today is a bustling metropolis with lively nightlife options thanks largely in part To local donations from residents post-fire
