A town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, Springfield is a historic and well-preserved community with a rich agricultural history. The community was founded in 1872 by General John C. Fremont and his wife, Julia Prentice Fremont, as a small farming village on the banks of the Columbia River. It grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of wagon trails leading to Portland and Seattle, and its role as a shipping point for goods arriving from British Columbia. By 1900, Springfield had grown to over 1,000 residents and had built several churches and schools. In 1907 it became the seat of Lane County after being chosen over Eugene by a vote of local officials. The town declined in the 1920s as agricultural production declined and population growth shifted towards urban areas; however, it remains an important cultural center in the valley. The original settlement site is located near what is now Interstate 5; however, most of what is now Springfield was burned down during World War II while military supplies were being transported through enemy territory. Today much of the preserved downtown area consists of reconstructed buildings from early Springfield businesses such as the Post Office (1892), Masonic Temple (1906), grocery store (1909), schoolhouse (1910) and jail (1890). Many other significant structures have been lost or destroyed since then including most importantly both Springfields Masonic Lodge No. 2 Aged & Women's Building which still stands today as one of only two remaining lodgehouses left in Oregon from this period

Oregon was founded by the United States in 1859 as a part of the Oregon Territory. The area that is now Springfield, Oregon was first settled by American settlers in 1847. At that time, the area consisted of only a small portion of what is now Oregon. By 1865, however, silver had been discovered in east central Oregon and many new settlers began to arrive, including some from Springfield. The town quickly grew and soon became known as one of the most important centers for mining and agricultural interests in eastern Oregon. In 1875, Springfield merged with nearby Portland to form a larger city called Portland. The merger caused economic troubles for both towns because it increased competition for jobs and services. However, the growth of Portland eventually led to major financial success for Springfield. In 1941, during World War II, Springfield became an important center for military activity because it became home to two airfields used by the United States Air Force (USAF) duringthe war: Aloha Field and Wheeler Field. After the war ended, Springfield declined somewhat but has since regained its former prominence as a manufacturing center due to its location on Interstate 5 and its access to resources such as waterfowl hunting and lumbering industries.
The first Europeans to visit Springfield, Oregon were the Spanish in 1826. They found a small town of about 50 people and named it San Pedro de Atacama. In 1847, Mexican Americans founded The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart on what is now First Avenue in Springfield. The church was moved to its current location in 1865.
