The incorporated municipality of Springfield was created on November 3, 1907 from parts of Yamhill and Lane counties. On February 13, 1911, it merged with Colville to form the new city of Springfield. In 1870s and 1880s there were several small settlements near present-day Springfield while people hunted and fished in Whatcom County and around Mount Hood National Forest. A post office called "Springfield" was established in 1881 with Wm Fenton as postmaster; it was discontinued in 1892 because no mail arrived from that location for two years. In 1902 the railroad reached Springfield by way of the southern route through Portland; this changed the character of the community as well as its economy which had been based mostly on agriculture until then. By 1910 over 60% of residents were employed within or within close proximity to their homes in agriculture or other businesses such as groceries, transportation, munitions plants or breweries/wineries; 10% were employed elsewhere within Multnomah County but still relied heavily on agriculture for their income. On November 3, 1907 when a group of citizens led by Mayor Hildebrandt proposed creating an incorporated municipality named after them – "Springfield Township", it received broad support due to its sound economic prospects and growing population size compared to existing municipalities in that area at that time (the incorporation would happen three days later). With over 661 signatures gathered they submitted a petition to become an unincorporated township on December 1st 1907 with Hildebrandt serving as treasurer until his death on January 25th 1908 marking only the second mayor ever elected without being appointed by the government (the first being Cushman who served from 1889-1893). At first growth was limited to just a few homes but soon enough there were businesses popping up all around town selling everything from candy bars to hardware stores: groceries like hardware store pioneer Jens Jensen started opening up shop about 1903 along with baker Harry Weyers who opened up what is now known as Hecht's bakery across Broadway from where Goodman's grocery now stands; clothing store founder Emanuel Holm opened his first store at 2nd & Union Avenues which became one of early downtown streets name after him - Holm Street today became one of many commercial districts throughout town including much recent development along Naito Parkway adjacent thereto housing large box stores such as Macy's Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation., JCPenney Co., etc.; streetcars ran regularly between downtown and outlying neighborhoods providing easy access into town for both shoppers and workers - today Main Street running perpendicular opposite NW corner leading eastward once crossed by Naito Parkway remains active business district thoroughfare providing access into town even today despite multiple redevelopment projects underway nearby Emanuel Holm died suddenly aged 70 years old leaving behind numerous children including wife Ida Mae (27), son Julius Jr.(19), daughter Stella Jean(15) all living independently until her death also aged 70 years old following a long battle against leukemia; son Julius Jr.(19) followed father into Hardware Store ownership upon his mother's passing The City Council meeting on December 7th 1907 resulted in passage by voice vote Resolution setting aside $5 per week towards building fund for public works projects not already approved pursuant to ordinances passed during previous meetings plus an additional $10 per week if necessary for water tanks and sewers needed for future growth – these funds would be used primarily for street lightsening necessary for visibility when driving through certain areas during night hours When adopted President William McKinley signed it into law becoming effective January 1st 1908 . Thereafter rapid growth continued unabated with businesses sprouting up throughout every block filling up almost every available storefront space making daily life very busy indeed! Streetsboro Avenue becomes home to many popular local restaurants such as Moe's Tavern which has been open since 1906 next door Springfields Democratic Clubhouse founded back 1912 next door State Theater built 1915 featuring live music nightly starting at 8pm

The community of Springfield, Oregon was founded in 1877 by Isabella Jane and Brothers John and George H. Smith. The town served as the county seat for Lane County from its incorporation until 1893.
