In 1862, Confederate General John Custer's forces encountered Union forces under Brigadier General Andrew Johnson at Battle Of Rosecrans Creek near present-day Florence while pursuing their retreat from Grant's army after their victory at Pea Ridge two weeks earlier; Custer's force lost 11 men killed or mortally wounded and 30 captured during this engagement which helped set off a series of fiercely fought battles throughout Lincoln County between Unionists and Confederates over several months culminating with Easter Sunday 1865 at Big Hole Lake where Union troops overcame a numerically superior Confederate force including 1st Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer to win a famous battle that symbolized American success against slavery during Reconstruction era America. Aftermath of Battle At Big Hole Lake: Union Major Edwin Vail reported that "It appeared to me as if there had been one shot fired by both armies - twelve hundred shots were fired ... more than twenty negroes were killed." This battle led to increased control over Indian Territory following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; however, it also created animosity between Native Americans and white settlers which continues to this day in areas such as Orson Welles' broadcast "The War In Our Time" (1940) regarding events leading up to World War II because many noncombatants died due to skirmishes around Big Hole Lake

Springfield, Oregon is a small town in the high desert of southeastern Oregon. The population was 5,558 at the 2010 census. This served as an artillery depot and garrison for US forces during the Spanish-American War while also providing access to land east of the Siskiyou Mountains that later became Orson Scott Card's Kern County homebase when he moved there from Salt Lake City in 1915 as CEO of United Fruit Company. Development began rapidly after World War II with growth in agriculture, light industry, retail trade and professional services; however, much progress has been made since then including reductions in poverty rates and increasing diversity through both inward migration and outward investment
In 1887, a group of farmers and business men from Springfield, Oregon founded the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. The company built a railroad from Springfield to Medford, Oregon. The company was successful and in 1912 it merged with the Northern Pacific Railroad. The new company continued to build trains until 1970.
