In 1850, the first post office was established in Springfield and it served as the primary economic center for the area. The town continued to grow and by 1861, it had a population of over 500 people. By 1870, there were also stores and homes located within the boundaries of Springfield. In that year, two new towns were founded in Oregon – Corvallis and Eugene – but due to lack of resources, both towns quickly died out.
