Springfield is a small town in Oregon, located about an hour and a half drive east of Portland. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Mt. After that battle, General Lee's division stopped at Springfield for supplies before continuing downriver to Jacksonport where they met again with General Grant's division near present day Roseburg. Oregon became a state in 1889 and as a result, much of what is now central and eastern Oregon was added to Springfield including parts of present day Hillsboro and Beaverton which are still known as "Old Springfields". In 1915, after World War I ended, many refugees from Europe settled in Springfield due to Congressional attempts at resettlement through such programs as the Gilded Cage Act which created quotas for economic immigrants from southern European countries such as Italy and Spain without any opportunity for American citizens or others possessing family skills or qualifications to immigrate into those areas. Many jobs open during wartime were lost when people returned home but over time some new businesses cropped up around this time including J & R Printing Company which continues today as JPL Contracting Services Incorporated also known simply as JCSI; The Wagon Wheel Restaurant opened circa 1944; The Springside Inn opened in 1951; The Church began services on October 14th 1953 (Christmas Eve) following an effort by one resident Mrs John Fenton to build a church on land donated by her parents; finally Sprague Dairy opened its doors on December 1st 1955 becoming one of only two Cream Cheese stores west of Interstate 5 until it closed in 1984.; old post office building served primarily as domestic storage until it was moved out back onto the street corner between Main Street and State Street (now SE Clinton St.) in 1991.; first high school (now elementary school)opened there on November 8th 1948 followed by Centennial High School which opened three years later on March 6th 1950.; finally Cherry Creek Elementary School open its doors September 26th 1960.] Today most residents are engaged full-time with their families while some continue working outside the home while others take care of necessary government functions like County government offices or public schools within town limits. Downtown has seen redevelopment with several new businesses opening since 2007 including Sprague Dairy & Cafe openings along Withrow Street just south of Federal Courthouse Square - now known colloquially "The Landing" - giving rise both to increased foot traffic throughout downtown area but also contributing significantly toSpringfield's nickname "The City That No One Leaves".
