However, during World War I Springfield saw its biggest impact as a military base where troops from all over the country were stationed. In addition to hosting an army hospital and barracks, the town also played host to a number of other military installations such as Fortugas and Camp McDowell. The war ended with the end of World War I and Springfield slowly began to decline in popularity after that. However, due to its location close to Portland, Oregon and the new housing developments built in response to the war, Springfield regained some of its former glory over the next few years. In 1925 Springfield was renamed after George Washington Carver – one of America’s most famous agricultural pioneers – thanks to his work helping developa new system for using soil moisture data to improve crop yields. Carver is also credited with developing what is now known as carrageenan which helps make yogurt commercially successful. Over time however, other industries started displacing agriculture in Springfield; by 2000 it only had around 100 residents working in agriculture still compared toPortland’s 5 million people! However, even though Springfield has been declining in popularity over recent decades it still retains a certain level of fame due to its history and culture. For example, every year on July 4th there is an event called “Washington County Fair” which features free concerts and food booths from local businesses along with activities like dodgeball matches or cornhole tournaments! Overall, Springfield has experienced many changes throughout its history but has always retained some of its unique traditions including being one of America’s oldest continuously inhabited communities dating back more than 200 years! Springfield was founded in 1847 by Captain John F. Higginson and his wife, Mary. The town was named after Springfield Township in Wayne County, Ohio, where Captain Higginson had been born in 1814. In 1850, the community of Springfield merged with the nearby town of Hood River to form the new city of Hood River. In 1862, a fire destroyed most of the town center and rebuilding began immediately. The first store in Springfield was built on Second Street near what is now Oregon Avenue. By 1865, most businesses were located on First Street between State Street and Oregon Avenue. The city grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1870 it boasted a population of over 10,000 people. However, due to problems such as high crime rates and an inability to provide basic services such as water supply or libraries, Springfield reached its peak around 1880 when it had a population of 25,000 people. However, starting in the late 1800s things started to change for Springfield as industry slowly moved out from downtown while social unrest increased throughout the city periphery (due largely to uncontrolled immigration). Finally unable to sustainable maintain its large population size withoutoutside assistance (and ultimately succumbing to economic decline), by 1907 Springfield had shrunk back down to 5500 residents – still larger than any other US cities at that time.
