Springfield, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. It is the county seat of Multnomah County and home to the University of Portland. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name "Springfield" originated from a landing on the site by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 during his exploration of the Columbia River area. The first post office in Springfield was established in 1847. In 1859, it became part of Portland, then part of Seattle before becoming an independent city once again in 1907. Springfield is located on a bend of the Willamette River and has been known for its agriculture since early days when farmers used water rights along the river to irrigate their crops. Over time, Springfield's economy changed as it grew into a major metropolis with many businesses and services centered around its downtown area including banks and factories that produced items such as textiles and cars.
In 1848, the first permanent settler in what is now Springfield, Oregon was George H. Smith. In 1862, John C. Fremont and his men founded the town of Fremont on the Snake River which later became Springfield. The town had a post office from 1868 to 1886 and was named after General William J. Hardee's Creek Valley Campaign of 1866 where he fought against Native Americans. The first school in Springfield was built in 1870 by Master teacher John Wills and students from nearby Jackson County Schools until it burned down in 1903. A second school was built in 1895 by Mrs. Fenton Ewing with help from local businesses including J&J Bean Livery and Mr. Barker's Boot Store before it also burned down in 1903. A third school building was erected at 5th Avenue and Naito Parkway near the present day Kipling Elementary School by Mrs. Ladd & Sons grocery store after a $6000 grant from the Oregon legislature for education purposes was received in 1907 which helped fund that year's construction of that facility as well as future additions such as an auditorium, gymnasium, kitchenette, science wing/library, and kindergarten classrooms which were completed between 1909-1910 under then Superintendent Hiram Sells Johnson who also served as City Manager during that time period A new high school (now known as Cascade High School) opened its doors to students on October 1st 1922 following years of planning by Principal Harry Whitehurst along with support from local business owners including Mr. Barker's Boot Store who donated land for the school site next door to their store on Naito Parkway . With its original capacity of 1,500 students this large high school would eventually grow into one of downtown Springfield's most popular educational institutions serving over 12K students each year through special classes/programs offered such as agriculture/forestry/ Fisheries/ math etc.. It closed its doors on September 30th 1991 but reopened again for grades 9-12 under current Superintendent Driscoll Taylor with additional classroom space currently available Upon reopening however Cascade has been struggling financially ever since becoming embroiled in controversy surrounding allegations of sexual abuse committed by some former staff members back when it operated as Cascade Junior High School before being merged into Standford HS back in 1986
