When the last Ulysses S Grant was president of the United States in 1877, he ordered all federal lands be surveyed and sold including most of present-day Springfield except for a small part that he reserved for himself along Interstate 5 south of downtown. In 1870, local businessmen negotiated with General George Custer about buying his land north of downtown for resettlement if war broke out between United States troops and Native Americans living in what is now southeastern Oregon; Custer agreed but did not live to see his plan realized because he died days after leaving Springfield for an attack on Crow Nation encampments at Fort Hall in Idaho Springs two weeks later. In 1893, Local Mayor James Wicker built Wicker Park as a shopping center complete with banks (the first such establishment in Oregon), restaurants, theaters, hotels and other businesses adjacent to then-new State Street between Third Avenue & Fourth Avenue NW., one block northeast of present-day Pioneer Square across Northwest Boulevard from Weisman’s Jewelry store adjoining First Avenue NE.). This Commercial District gradually became known as “Springfield” or simply “The Town” throughout much of history due largely to its prominence as both a commercial center for surrounding areas duringOregon’s Gold Rush era (1848-1857)and thereafter as successive generations – starting with present day residents – developed their personal lives thereabouts while still paying homage to their forebears who had originated here more than three centuries earlier! On July 4, 1859, the Oregon Territory was created from part of the Mexican American War. The territory included present-day Springfield and portions of the city of Portland. On November 29, 1859, the first vote in the new Territory was held to determine whether or not to secede from Oregon. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of secession and on December 7,1859, Springfield became an independent republic.
