In 1916–1917, Mayor John Witherspoon spearheaded efforts to add streetscape improvements to downtown Springfield; these were completed in 1928–29 after his reelection as Mayor on a platform supporting beautification projects around town center including renovation of several buildings which had been built before WWI using local brick or timbers without any modern features or windows (the original anchors). During WWII Missouri Pacific Railway Depot #1 served as Headquarters for US Forces Northwest during most of 1945 until occupation ended by Japan on September 2nd 1945; HQ moved into Japanese occupied Seattle on September 3rd 1945 until liberated by US Forces October 15th 1945 with Japanese still present inside Depot #1 according to some sources [See: "The Battle at Seattle: A History"]. After liberation HQ moved back into Missouri Pacific Railroad Depot #1 on October 16th 1945 until decommissioned May 6th 1946 along side all other railroad depots within US Forces Northwest once again becoming an abandoned building but with some further changes over time such as being converted into apartments starting in the early 1960s followed by it becoming a museum starting in 1984) . When MOXR Depot closed effective December 31st 1977 all operations except storage are discontinued leaving PCW Depot at its current location responsible for long distance transport services out west today though long distance transport services will no longer stop at MOXR Depot when it closes effective December 31st 2017 Today there are few active transportation modes outside Long Distance Transport companies like Amtrak , UPS & FedEx As well as more recent development such as high school students having access to classes online since Fall 2014 through Great Schools USA program

The town grew rapidly due to its location near two salt lakes (Enderby Lake and Round Lake) which providedChief Joseph with water for his wagons; also, logging camps were established around Springfield during this time period for lumber booms in the surrounding area. The first store opened in 1852 and by 1858 there were six stores and 300 residents living in Springfield. A school was built in 1861 but closed soon after because of financial difficulties. A sawmill was started in 1865 but failed due to low demand from customers. A railroad station was built along with a hotel/stockyards on Round Lake before being destroyed by fire in 1886 while under construction by nearby Bend Railway Company

During World War II, Springfield processed food for military service members from across Oregon and Washington. In 1951, the community merged with nearby Ashland to form a single municipality called Ashland-Springfield-Olympia.
