In 1957–1958 efforts were made to build a new City Hall complex adjacent to what is now Old Main Street but these failed due to cost overruns; instead work began on creating a park which would eventually be called "North Park". Springfield, Oregon is a small town located in Butte County, Oregon, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butte County. The community was founded in 1887 and named after Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1862, General Custer and his troops were marching through Butte County when they came across a Indian village on the banks of the Umatilla River. A party of warriors led by Chief Seattle attacked the column, killing all but three members of Custer's unit. This event is cited as one of the reasons for American hostility towards Indians and has been memorialized in various romantic stories about Native Americans. The first settler in Springfield was George Washington Coffin who arrived there in 1887 with his family from Illinois. He ranched around the area before starting a grocery store near present-day Old Town Square which he built himself out of logs and brush using adobe bricks from nearby Mount Hood National Forest . In 1893 he married Fannie Sprague and together they started to raise chickens (later replaced by pigs) on their property which became known as "Coffin Hill". They also operated a general store until 1901 when they moved to larger quarters at 529 Main Street which became their home until their death in 1957. In that year their daughter Alice married Roy Murchison who took over operation of the store after Coffin's death; it continued into operation as an independent business until 1975 when it merged with Kmart to form one large company called Super Kmart Incorporated (SKI). A post office called Springfield was established at this location on December 14, 1887, although no mail ever reached its residents'. The first postmaster was Lillie Senterick who served from 1888-1892; her husband Hiram Senterick served from 1893-1900 At this time there were only two houses in town - both owned by Mrs Senterick - while also four shotguns made by Mr Sprague lay uncollected outside his house/store front."
