In 1881, Springfield, Oregon was the site of a shooting that left four people dead and thirteen injured. The event was called the Portland Gun War and it took place in what is now known as the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence's conference room. It was a public gun battle between local sheriff's deputies and outlaws who were using guns smuggled into the area from Mexico. The fight began when Sheriff John Copley heard gunfire coming from an alley near his home. The sheriff ordered his men to open fire on the bandits while he ran towards one of their horses to get another shot at them. However, as he reached them, one of the bandits cut him down with a knife and forced his way onto his horse before fleeing into neighbouringyards away from the shootout. A short time later (approximate time frame), three more Shooters arrived on scene; however, only one man survived after being shot through the heart by an outlaw as he rode past him on a white horse*.
