The earliest schools that were established in Springfield were the Sacred Heart School which opened on October 1st, 1887 and the Lincoln School which opened on December 2nd, 1888. Both these schools served as middle schools for students from surrounding villages until they could be sent to school proper when they reached age 12th grade. From there, they would be able to attend high school until their graduation or after if they opted for an additional education such as vocational training or college studies. Soon after high school graduates began attending college such as Pacific Northwest College (PNC) and Portland State University (PSU). PNC was founded in 1893 while PSU was founded in 1903 both universities being part ofUniversity of Oregon at Eugene (UO). Both these institutions helped solidify Springfield's reputation as an important educational center within Oregon while also creating jobs for locals during their respective administrations time periods. Since its establishment back into society through these two highly respected institutions, many other colleges and universities have affiliated themselves with UO throughout its various incarnations includingPortland State University-Hawaii Campus (PSU-HCC),Idaho National Laboratory-Springfield Campus (INL-SC), Southern Illinois University Carbondale-Springfield Campus (SIUC-SC), Western Washington University - Yakima Valley Campus (WWU-YV),Oregon Health Sciences Center(OHSC)-Oregon Health Science Center Campus(OUCHS)),Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station(OAES)-Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station Field Office(OOLA)),Salem State College-(SSC)-Salem State College Museum District(SSC/Museum District)),and Portland Community Colleges--Portland Community Colleges System[PCCS]. With so many diverse programs associated with UO throughout its various incarnations it can be difficult to determine just how significant each individual program actually was within local communities or overall Salem County culture during their administrations time period however it is safe to say that each one played a significant role in helping Salem County grow and develop socially and economically!
In 1847, the Oregon Territory was created from parts of California and Nevada. The area now includes much of the eastern side of Springfield, Oregon. In 1850, General George A. Smith led an army through the area and founded a town called "Springs" on the east bank of the Willamette River. The name stuck and today's city is named for him.
