He stayed at the hotel called "The White House" which stands today on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets NW. When he left for home he took with him a trunkload of silver coins which are now on display at American Numismatic Museum (formerly Union Pacific Museum). In 1870–71 Congress passed the Homestead Act which gave homesteaders free land within 160 miles (260 km) of any city or stop on stagecoach routes running eastward from Missouri through Oregon into California. This Act helped establish agriculture as an important industry in Springfield because farmers could sell their produce directly to consumers instead of having to go through merchants or wholesalers
Springfield, Oregon was founded in 1847 by John F. Smith and his wife, Martha.
