Johnston who had been killed at Battle of Okinawa. The City Council also recommended that the name be changed back to Springfield after World War I ended because many people living there thought it sounded like Japan. However, this proposal was not accepted and the city continued to be called Springfield until 1970 when it changed its name back to Oregon City following a referendum vote. Oregon City is home to two universities: Portland State University and Eugene University which have their campuses within walking distance of one another. Additionally, there are several businesses located within close proximity including a bank, a grocery store, and several restaurants as well as professional sports teams such as the Portland Trail Blazers and Eugene Emeralds football team which play at Autzen Stadium on campus. Oregon City has been known for its annual events such as the Rose Festival and Christmas Parade which are held throughout February or March depending on year. These events typically include music concerts, art exhibitions, food tastings,and fireworks displays along with contests for children aged 3-12 years old including a tree- decorating contest and stock market trading game!
On July 4, 1859, the first settlers of Springfield arrived in Oregon. They were prospectors and miners who traveled up the Snake River from what is now Boise, Idaho. The town was named after Springfield in Massachusetts, where some of the pioneers had lived before moving to Oregon. The first post office was established in 1859, and it was called "Rocky Mount." In 1862, a sawmill was built in town and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1864, a store and hotel were built on Main Street. In 1865, a school was started in town and it continued to be operated until 1954.
